Combustion Air Sizing (Outdoor)
Flip cardThe calculation of required free area for openings that supply combustion, dilution, and ventilation air directly from the outdoors for gas appliances.
- Often based on 1 sq inch per 10 CFM.
- Alternatively, 1 sq inch per 4,000 BTU/hr.
- Requires high and low openings for proper ventilation.
Memory trick: Combustion air needs BIG HOLES, high and low, to FEED the FLAME.
CPVC Temperature Limits
Flip cardChlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) piping has specific temperature and pressure ratings that must be observed to prevent degradation, especially for continuous hot water applications.
- Rated for hot and cold water distribution.
- Temperature and pressure ratings are inversely related (higher temp = lower pressure rating).
- Continuous exposure to high temperatures (e.g., 140°F/60°C and above) can accelerate degradation.
Memory trick: Hot water demands the right pipe, or it'll burst its type.
